Benjamin Black es el seudónimo de John Banville (Wexford, Irlanda, 1945). Con El libro de las pruebas (Alfaguara, 2014) —que compone junto a Fantasmas y Athena la Trilogía de Freddie Montgomery (Alfaguara, 2020)— fue finalista del Premio Man Booker, que ya había obtenido en 2005 con El mar (Alfaguara, 2019), consagrada también por el Irish Book Award como mejor novela del año. Entre su obra destacan Regreso a Birchwood (Alfaguara, 2017), El intocable (Alfaguara, 2015), La señora Osmond (Alfaguara, 2018), la Trilogía Cleave, ciclo de novelas que incluye Eclipse (Alfaguara, 2014), Imposturas (Alfaguara, 2015) y Antigua luz (Alfaguara, 2012, uno de los mejores libros del año según la crítica española), La guitarra azul (Alfaguara, 2016), Tetralogía científica (Alfaguara, 2022) —que reúne las novelas Copérnico(ganadora del James Tait Black Memorial Prize), Kepler (merecedora del Premio de Ficción de The Guardian), La carta de Newton y Mefisto—, Las singularidades (Alfaguara, 2023) y La alquimia del tiempo. Un memoir dublinés, de próxima publicación. Bajo el seudónimo de Benjamin Black, que continúa utilizandoexclusivamente en sus ediciones en español, ha publicado en Alfaguara Negra El Lémur (2009), la serie de novelas negras protagonizada por el doctor Quirke —El secreto de Christine (2007), El otro nombre de Laura (2008), En busca de April (2011), Muerte en verano (2012), Venganza (2013), Órdenes sagradas (2015), Las sombras de Quirke (2017) y Quirke en San Sebastián (2021)—, La rubia de ojos negros (2014), en la que, por invitación de los herederos de Raymond Chandler, resucita al mítico detective Philip Marlowe, Los lobos de Praga (2019) y Las hermanas Jacobs (2023). En 2011 recibió el prestigioso Premio Franz Kafka, a menudo considerado como la antesala del Premio Nobel, y en 2013 fue galardonado con el Premio Austriaco de Literatura Europea y, en España, con el Premio Leteo y el Premio Liber. En 2014 le fue otorgado el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras por «su inteligente, honda y original creación novelesca».

1950s. A stunning blonde walks into a P.I.’s office. No need to know more to know what you are gonna get. This an old-school novel of P.I. + femme fatale + he doesn’t know what the hell he’s getting into. Black has been compared to Chandler which is probably the best compliment a noir writer can get but also a double-edged sword for those expecting the same level of greatness from the “pupil”. Because I do everything backwards, I’ve read this first. And it has been a mesmerizing read. The prose flows throughout the book. On paper, Marlowe doesn’t seem like a real person who would exist in reality but Black made me believe I could run into him if I were to hire a private detective. And you can’t help but sympathize with the fellow, unlike other P.I.s I’ve read. You know the black eyed blonde is hiding information and you know Marlowe is not gonna be able to resist her and as as result, gonna get himself in a bunch of trouble with some shady individuals. The Black Eyed Blonde is a novel that looks noir (that beautiful cover) and reads noir. A delight to the senses. Fans of the genre, don’t miss out on this one.
