Rabindranath Tagore nació el 7 de mayo de 1861 en la casa familiar de Jorasanko (Calcuta). Su familia era el centro de un importante grupo social amante del arte. Este ambiente caló hondo en Tagore, que destacaría como poeta, filósofo, pintor, dramaturgo, músico, novelista y autor de canciones. Él mismo tradujo parte de su obra al inglés, lo que ayudaría aún más a su expansión. En 1913 recibió el premio Nobel de Literatura. Tagore falleció el 7de agosto de 1941.
