Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904), nacido en una isla del mar Jónico, se crió entre Grecia, Irlanda, Inglaterra y Francia. También vivió veinte años en Estados Unidos, donde trabajó como periodista. En 1890, Hearn, viajero infatigable, partió a Japón con la intención de escribir una serie de artículos para la revista Harper’s. Se enamoró del país, se volcó a la enseñanza universitaria y concibió una docena de obras sobre Japón. Se casó con Setsuko Koizumi, oriunda de una familia de samuráis, y tuvo con ella cuatro hijos. En 1896 se nacionalizó japonés, abrazó el budismo y cambió su nombre por el de Yakumo Koizumi.
